Parenting & Emotional Wellbeing
We are social beings. We are connected to each other Our nervous systems speak to each other.
Co-regulation is the ability for someone’s nervous system to calm simply by being close to a calm person.
So, if you are a parent and your child who dysregulates, the best thing you can do is to calm yourself first.
Children’s nervous systems are still developing so becoming dysregulated is a normal part of human development.
Although that can be a highly stressful time for a parent when the child is screaming and seemingly uncontrollable, if you take a moment to do some breath work and some self-reassuring statements such as” I’ve got this” or “this too shall pass”, and just sit with your child. Stay nearby and reassure them that you are there for them when they need you.
And remember, parenting is the hardest job on earth, and kids don’t come with a manual!
