Why I became a counsellor.

After my first child was born in my early 20’s, I suffered from a psychotic episode and postnatal depression.

This was hugely traumatising for both myself and my family.

Through the process of the mental health system, I was offered counselling. I was resistant at first however I engaged with Pam.

Pam was a counsellor working in the public health system. She challenged a lot of my beliefs; she would give me homework.

She encouraged me to write things down in the form of journaling.

It was hard work that it was transformative.

My confidence grew.

I discovered my values.

She encouraged me to study at university level; she saw something in me that I could not. I was smart and had potential.

I studied human development whilst pregnant with my second child, then psychology.
I completed my BA majoring in psychology over 12 years whilst working and raising my two young children.

After a series of different jobs and life events (including two more psychotic episodes) I found employment in a social services agency as the receptionist.

One of their practitioners asked me why I was working as a receptionist with a psychology degree. My simple response was I don’t know what to do with my degree. Long story short she encouraged me to study a Masters of counselling degree. I studied over two years.  My children were now teenagers.

I graduated seven years ago, and have worked as a counsellor ever since. My work is my passion. My children are now adults. I recently relocated to Motueka to be closer to them. I am self-employed and have freedom and flexibility.
